Calm app – bedtime stories for adults

Calm app is a mindfulness and meditation app that not only offers various types of meditation and mindfulness practices, but also bedtime stories for adults. Yes, bedtime stories for adults! When was the last time when someone read you a story before you fall asleep? It offers a selection of fictional and non-fictional stories read by various people, so you have a choice of soothing voices that will lull you into sleep.

The Californian company Calm app was founded in 2012, by Michael Acton-Smith and Alex Tew, they define their mission with Calm app as:


“Our mission is to make the world healthier and happier through the super power of meditation and mindfulness.”

The idea started off as a mindfulness and meditation app, however at the end of the last year a wonderful feature – Sleep Stories – got added to the app. Some of the stories are even read by their own Head of Content, Tamara Levitt. Co-founder Tew said that, he hopes that the new Sleep Stories feature will help to remind users of happier and easier times of their lives:

“Sleep Stories are meant to take you back to a simpler mental state and let your brain relax and prepare for a deep rest, just as it did when you were young.”

The stories will guide you away from the hustle and bustle of your busy day into the calm and peaceful atmosphere of the night.

Each sleep story is around 20 to 30 minutes long, you can choose between non-fiction or fiction. The stories will take you on a journey through ‘The Sequoia Forests’ (read by Christine Cullingworth), on a ride on ‘The Trans Siberian Railroad’ (read by Erik Braa) or bring you into the world of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ (read by Nick Viall, The Bachelor). Some of the stories are original content created by the Calm team and some are well known classic tales. The stories mix various types of music, and sound effects, which will help you to relax and ease into your sleep. Bedtime stories are narrated by different readers including UK national treasure and the narrator of Harry Potter series audio-books Stephen Fry, Game of Thrones actor Jerome Flynn, The Wire and Treme’s Clark Peters, and a London based singer-songwriter Beatie Wolfe, to name but a few. Hence you have a broad selection of various calming and soothing voices, and you can choose whose voice is most relaxing for you.
