Darkness Into Light stepped into the sunrise today

Over 200,000 people walked from Darkness into Light today in a bid to raise awareness of suicide and self-harm.

Darkness Into Light events took place in over 150 locations, across four different continents this morning at dawn.

Last year, the initiative raised over €3.5 million for the Pieta House charity, which aims to “create a world where suicide, self-harm and stigma have been replaced by hope, self-care and acceptance.”

The Darkness Into Light event began today at 4.14 am, with a 5 kilometer walk which brings the participants into the dawn, symbolising new hope and renewal.

According to The Irish TimesThe first international walk kicked off in Christchurch, New Zealand at 7.15pm GMT on Thursday and the last walk will be in Vancouver, Canada at 1pm GMT on Saturday.

Social media was awash with updates from the event, which grows in popularity and reach every year. The first Darkness Into Light took place in Dublin in 2008, with a crowd of 400 people in the Phoenix Park.
