Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian might have some competition on Instagram now that an even bigger celebrity has joined the ranks. Pope Francis is no stranger to the occasional selfie with adoring crowds and is already a Twitter icon (with almost 9 million followers), so it makes sense that he would join the popular image hosting site to connect with a larger audience.
The media-savvy pontiff met with the CEO and co-founder of Instagram, Kevin Systrom, at the Vatican recently, so it’s possible he picked up a few pointers during the visit.
Within a few hours of opening his Instagram account, Pope Francis had almost a million followers, although it wasn’t long before doctored photographs started doing the rounds. There have only been a handful of pictures posted on the account so far, which feature images of the pontiff at prayer.
To connect with Pope Francis on Instagram, you can find him with his username @Franciscus. You can find us on there as @mygoodplanet.
Last December, MyGoodPlanet was present at The Vatican to witness the Pope’s Christmas message, during which he urged the media to focus more on positive and uplifting news.
