Our lifestyle expert Baiba breaks down the best sustainable gifts for the holidays, one week at a time.
The holiday season is a problematic time for many, but not least for the environment. With an increase in online shopping, as well as the amount of gifts being given,
Reusable Coffee/Tea Cup to Go
My Good Planet previously has written about how our Planet Earth is slowly becoming ‘Planet Plastic’. So why not this Christmas encourage someone to make a switch and start using reusable coffee cup on the go. Plus, there are many initiatives that encourage coffee shops to give discount to those customers who bring their own cup. So it really is a win-win situation.
Here are some of our favourite reusable cups:
Made out of bamboo fibres, these are really lightweight coffee cups that sport an amazing array of designs; you can read more about what we have to say about Ecoffee Cups on our product spotlight here. In addition a menstrual cup brand Ruby Cup has joined its forces with Ecoffee Cup to not only offer you a sustainable option for your cup to go, but to also give a donation of a Ruby Cup for each purchase; buy one and give one. Head over here to read more about it and support this cause.
These cups to go are either made out of glass with cork (one of the most sustainable materials, read more here) or silicone bands or made out of non toxic polypropylene, BPA and BPS free, with silicone bands.
If you want to take being eco-conscious even one step further, you have found yourself the right cup. These travel mugs are made out of rice husk that is a waste material of rice production. In addition, these cups are completely and fully biodegradable. This means, that there is no need for the process of recycling, you just simply leave it to the nature.
Socks with a Cause
Socks are always a much appreciated gift, just look how many pair of socks have you left with no holes in them? How about this Christmas give some socks that support some wonderful causes and are made of eco-friendly materials, sporting bold colours and fantastic designs.
Here are some of our favourites that support great ideas, causes and people: Fazl Socks will keep your feet lovely and toasty, wear Gorilla Socks and save some gorillas, Shongolulu socks, named after the most persistent animal on our planet that lives deep in African wilderness, are dedicated to protect endangered animals and their habitats.
Beeswax Food Wrap
Beeswax food wrap is a piece of cotton cloth that is impregnated with beeswax; you can wash it and reuse it; a fantastic substitute for a cling film.
If you are feeling like you can do it yourself, you truly can, it is quite simple, especially if you are a beekeeper, you can find some easy instructions on how to make your own beeswax food wrap here, My Good Planet recommends using an organic cotton cloth.
Sustainable Water Bottle
Everyone gets thirsty when travelling, while sitting in lectures or while going on that wonderful extra long hike. If you have an adventurer in your family or maybe one of your friends loves long hikes or runs, it might be a great idea to gift them a sustainable water bottle. Encourage a traveller and adventurer in your life to use reusable water bottle while travelling, most of the coffee shops in the airports will kindly refill your bottle free of charge in the airports with no water fountains.
There are many options on the market; however this is our favourite:
This is the world’s most eco-friendly reusable water bottle with a purpose. It is really lightweight, since it is made out of sugarcane, yes, you read that one right, made out of sugarcane, it survives hits and bangs, cleans easily and it has one-handed design (which is fantastic when you are running) and it fits nicely in the side pockets of your backpack and standard cup holders. Plus, Yuhme even offers to buy eco-friendly bottle brushes to clean your bottle with. In addition, for every bottle sold Yuhme will provide 6 months of clean water for someone in the Central African Republic.
We each use three to four toothbrushes every year and they all end up on the landfill, imagine your first childhood toothbrush is still out there somewhere; it can take up to 500 years for it to degrade. Make a switch and do it together with your family and your housemates, this Christmas morning just switch their plastic toothbrushes to bamboo toothbrushes. And don’t worry, these toothbrushes won’t leave any pandas hungry, they are all “panda friendly” toothbrushes.
If you are super inspired, how about making your own toothpaste, you can find some instructions from Lauren of Trash is for Tossers here.
Come back next week for more sustainable and mindful gift ideas, and don’t forget to share these with your friends, in case there is something that you would like to see under the tree.
