Ethical vitamin and supplement producer, Viridian Nutrition, has become the first vitamin company in the world to be certified palm oil free.
Viridian Nutrition, founded in the UK in 1999, is a company that creates ethical and organic vitamins; they offer a multi-award-winning range of 200+ food supplements. Basing their fundamental principles in the areas of purity, charity and the environment, they have created a unique and beneficial range of everyday supplements.
Viridian is committed to clean label, 100% active ingredients, non-GM, non-irradiated, against animal testing and backed up by a 100% money-back efficacy guarantee. In addition to their ethical philosophy and green practices, valuing the importance of a minimum footprint on the earth, Viridian can now add The Palm Oil Free Certification Accreditation Programme’s certificate.
The International Palm Oil Free Certification Accreditation Programme (POFCAP) is the first certification of its kind in the world. It is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that was launched in Australia in 2017, to answer questions over the transparency of palm oil and its derivatives within products. The extensive and rigorous certification process involves exploring and tracing of all potential palm oil, as well as its derivatives, ingredients of a product back to its source. Since 2017 POFCAP has assessed over 800 products and certified them Palm Oil Free.
Palm oil is a type of edible vegetable oil that is derived from the palm fruit, grown on the African oil palm tree. It is the most widely used vegetable oil on Earth, and palm oil can be found in almost all product categories, including food, household cleaners, personal care products, as well as cosmetics.
“Palm oil may be found in more than 50% of products on supermarket shelves under a huge number of names which do not always include the word ‘palm’ making it difficult for consumers to know what is in the products they buy.” – Viridian
Today palm oil is grown throughout Africa, Asia, North America, and South America. Most of the time palm oil is grown, produced and exported without using sustainable measures; Malaysia and Indonesia now produce 85% of the world’s palm oil.
“Up to 300 football fields of forest are cleared every hour. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) acknowledges that in Malaysia and Indonesia the main driver for this rainforest destruction is the development of oil palm plantations.” – The World Wildlife Fund (WWF)
After the rigorous assessment, the entire range of 200+ Viridian Nutrition’s supplements has been certified Palm Oil Free. Viridian’s founder and MD Cheryl Thallon, said:
“Viridian Nutrition has been dedicated to supply chain clarity and transparency since our launch in 1999; adding a robust certification to our claims – whether it’s the Soil Association for organics, The Vegan Society for animal rights or this POFCAP certification – meets our ethical principles and gives confidence to our customers.”
Bev Luff, Co-Manager of POFCAP added:
“POFCAP is very excited to announce that Viridian Nutrition is the first vitamin company in the world to receive a Palm Oil Free Certification Trademark. Viridian Nutrition has submitted an extensive range of products which were successful in achieving certification. This new certification trademark will help consumers to make more sustainable and ethical product choices. As with all certification trademarks, a company’s products have to have undergone a thorough assessment and been successful which Viridian Nutrition has done.”
Protection of rainforest wildlife is also an issue close to Viridian’s heart – The Viridian Nutrition Charity Donation Programme has donated more than £10,000 to the Orangutan Foundation since 1999, and that is only one of the many charities that Viridian has supported over the years. Hence, by choosing Viridian you also choose to support environment and sustainable ways of living and sourcing ingredients.
